Ein Kristall oder kristalliner Festkörper ist ein festes Material, dessen Bestandteile Atome, Moleküle oder Ionen in einem geordneten Muster angeordnet sind, das sich in allen drei räumlichen Dimensionen erstreckt. Das Wort Kristall stammt aus dem altgriechischen Wort κρύσταλλος, was bedeutet, sowohl "Eis" und "Bergkristall", von κρύος, "eiskalt, Frost". Beispiele für große Kristalle sind Schneeflocken, Diamanten und Speisesalz. Die meisten anorganischen Feststoffe sind keine Kristalle, sondern Polykristalle, d.h. viele mikroskopische Kristalle, die zu einem einzigen Feststoff zusammengeschmolzen sind. Beispiele für Polykristalle sind die meisten Metalle, Gesteine, Keramiken und Eis. Eine dritte Kategorie von Feststoffen ist amorphe Feststoffe, wo die Atome überhaupt keine periodische Struktur haben. Beispiele für amorphe Feststoffe umfassen Glas, Wachs und viele Kunststoffe.
