Curium
Curium ist ein transuranes radioaktives chemisches Element mit dem Symbol Cm und der Ordnungszahl 96. Dieses Element der Actinidreihe wurde nach Marie und Pierre Curie benannt - beide waren bekannt für ihre Radioaktivitätsforschung. Curium wurde zuerst bewusst produziert und identifiziert im Juli 1944 von der Gruppe von Glenn T. Seaborg an der University of California, Berkeley. Die Entdeckung wurde geheim gehalten und erst im November 1945 der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. Die meisten Kuriositäten werden durch Bombardierung von Uran oder Plutonium mit Neutronen in Kernreaktoren hergestellt - eine Tonne verbrauchter Kernbrennstoff enthält etwa 20 Gramm Curium. Curium ist ein hartes, dichtes, silbernes Metall mit einem relativ hohen Schmelzpunkt und Siedepunkt für ein Actinid. Während es bei Umgebungsbedingungen paramagnetisch ist, wird es beim Abkühlen antiferromagnetisch, und andere magnetische Übergänge werden auch für viele Curiumverbindungen beobachtet. In den Verbindungen weist Curium gewöhnlich die Valenz +3 und manchmal +4 auf, und die +3-Valenz ist in Lösungen vorherrschend. Curium oxidiert leicht, und seine Oxide sind eine dominierende Form dieses Elements.
