Descant oder Discantus kann sich auf verschiedene Dinge in der Musik beziehen, je nach dem fraglichen Zeitraum; Etymologisch bedeutet das Wort eine Stimme oben oder von anderen entfernt. Ein Discant ist eine Form der mittelalterlichen Musik, in der ein Sänger eine feste Melodie sang und andere mit Improvisationen begleitet wurden. Das Wort in diesem Sinne stammt aus dem Begriff discantus supra librum und ist eine Form des gregorianischen Gesanges, in dem nur die Melodie notiert wird, aber eine improvisierte Polyphonie wird verstanden. Das discantus supra librum hatte spezifische Regeln für die Improvisation der zusätzlichen Stimmen. Später bedeutete der Begriff die Höhen- oder Sopran-Sängerin in jeder Gruppe von Stimmen oder die höhere Tonhöhe in einem Lied. Irgendwann, durch die Renaissance, Senkung im Allgemeinen auf Kontrapunkt. Heutzutage ist die Gegenpunktbedeutung am häufigsten. Descant kann sich auch auf den höchsten Rang einer Gruppe von Instrumenten beziehen, vor allem der Sopran- oder Rekorder. Ebenso kann es auch auf den Sopranschlüssel angewendet werden. Descant kann sich auch auf eine hohe, floride Melodie beziehen, die von einigen Sopranen als Dekoration für eine Hymne gesungen wird.
