Eine Wüste ist ein unfruchtbares Gebiet, wo wenig Niederschlag auftritt und folglich lebende Bedingungen für das Pflanzen- und Tierleben feindlich sind. Wüsten werden durch Verwitterungsprozesse gebildet, da große Temperaturschwankungen zwischen Tag und Nacht Belastungen auf die Felsen, die folglich in Stücke brechen. Obwohl Regen selten in Wüsten auftritt, gibt es gelegentliche Regenfälle, die zu Hochwasserfluten führen können. Regen, der auf heiße Felsen fällt, kann dazu führen, dass sie zerbrechen und die daraus resultierenden Fragmente und Trümmer, die über den Wüstenboden gestreut werden, werden durch den Wind weiter erodiert. Das nimmt Partikel von Sand und Staub auf und wafelt sie in Sand- oder Staubstürmen hoch.
