Cicero war ein Meister der Abschweifung, vor allem in seiner Fähigkeit, sich von der spezifischen Frage oder Frage zur Hand auf die allgemeinere Frage oder Frage, die es hing ab. Wie es bei den meisten uralten Rednern der Fall war, stellte sich Cicero's offensichtliche Abschweifung immer direkt auf das Thema aus. Während des zweiten Sophisten war die Fähigkeit, eine Rede von einem erwähnten Thema zu führen und dann wieder mit Gnade und Geschick zu kommen, um ein Zeichen der wahren Beredsamkeit zu sein.
