Dodo
Der Dodo ist ein ausgestorbener flugunfähiger Vogel, der auf der Insel Mauritius, östlich von Madagaskar im Indischen Ozean, endemisch war. Sein nächster genetischer Verwandter war der ebenfalls ausgestorbene Rodrigues Solitaire, wobei die beiden die Unterfamilie Raphinae der Familie der Tauben und Tauben bilden. Der engste lebende Verwandter des Dodos ist die Nikobertaube. Ein weißer Dodo war einmal falsch gedacht, auf der nahe gelegenen Insel Réunion existiert zu haben. Unterfossilreste zeigen, dass der Dodo etwa 1 Meter hoch war und 10-18 kg in der Wildnis gewogen haben könnte. Der Auftritt des Dodos im Leben wird nur durch Zeichnungen, Gemälde und schriftliche Berichte aus dem 17. Jahrhundert belegt. Weil diese sehr unterschiedlich sind, und weil nur einige Illustrationen bekannt sind, um aus lebenden Exemplaren gezogen worden zu sein, ist ihr genauer Aussehen im Leben ungelöst. Ebenso ist wenig mit Sicherheit über seinen Lebensraum und Verhalten bekannt. Es wurde mit bräunlich-grauem Gefieder, gelben Füßen, einem Büschel von Schwanzfedern, einem grauen, nackten Kopf und einem schwarzen, gelben und grünen Schnabel dargestellt.
