Gaetano Donizetti
Domenico Gaetano Maria Donizetti war ein italienischer Komponist aus Bergamo in der Lombardei. Zusammen mit Gioachino Rossini und Vincenzo Bellini war Donizetti in den ersten fünfzig Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts ein führender Komponist des Baikantischen Opernstils. Obwohl Donizetti nicht aus musikalischem Hintergrund kam, wurde er in einem frühen Alter unter dem Flügel des Komponisten Simon Mayr aufgenommen, der ihn durch ein volles Stipendium in einer Schule eingeschrieben hatte, die er eingerichtet hatte. Dort erhielt er eine ausführliche Ausbildung in den Künsten der Fuge und des Kontrapunkts. Mayr war auch maßgeblich daran, einen Platz für den jungen Mann an der Bologna Akademie zu bekommen, wo er im Alter von 19 Jahren seine erste Einakt-Oper, die Komödie Il Pigmalione, schrieb, obwohl es nicht scheint, während seines Spiels aufgetreten zu sein Lebenszeit. Im Laufe seiner Karriere schrieb Donizetti fast 70 Opern, aber ein Angebot im Jahre 1822 von Domenico Barbaja, der Impresario des Teatro San Carlo in Neapel, der der neunten Oper des Komponisten folgte, führte zu seinem Umzug in diese Stadt und seine Residenz, die Dauerte bis zur Produktion von Caterina Cornaro im Januar 1844. Insgesamt stellte Neapel 51 von Donizettis Opern vor.
