Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft der westafrikanischen Staaten
Die Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft der westafrikanischen Staaten ist eine regionale Gruppe von fünfzehn westafrikanischen Ländern. Gegründet am 28. Mai 1975, mit der Unterzeichnung des Vertrags von Lagos, ist seine Mission, die wirtschaftliche Integration in der gesamten Region zu fördern. Als eine der Säulen der afrikanischen Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft angesehen, wurde die Organisation gegründet, um "kollektive Selbstversorgung" für ihre Mitgliedsstaaten zu schaffen, indem sie einen einzigen großen Handelsblock durch eine Wirtschafts- und Handelsgemeinschaft schuf. Es dient auch als Friedenstruppe in der Region. Die Organisation arbeitet offiziell in drei gleichberechtigten Sprachen - Französisch, Englisch und Portugiesisch. Die ECOWAS besteht aus zwei Institutionen zur Umsetzung von Maßnahmen - der ECOWAS-Kommission und der ECOWAS-Bank für Investitionen und Entwicklung, die früher als Kooperationsfonds bezeichnet wurde, bis sie 2001 umbenannt wurde. Einige Mitglieder der Organisation sind im Laufe der Jahre gekommen. 1976 trat Kap Verde bei ECOWAS ein, und im Dezember 2000 zog sich Mauretanien zurück, nachdem er im Dezember 1999 seine Absicht angekündigt hatte.
