Ein Steilhang ist ein steiler Hang oder eine lange Klippe, die aus fehlerhafter und resultierender Erosion auftritt und zwei relativ ebene Bereiche unterschiedlicher Erhebungen trennt. In der Regel wird die Senkung austauschbar mit Scarp verwendet. Aber einige Quellen unterscheiden die beiden Begriffe, wo sich die Senkung auf den Rand zwischen zwei Landformen bezieht, während Scarp gleichbedeutend mit einer Klippe oder einem steilen Hang ist. Die Oberfläche des Steilhangs heißt ein scharfes Gesicht.

Die erste Definition von Böschung im Wörterbuch ist die lange ununterbrochene steile Seite eines Grates oder Plateaus, der durch die Erosion gebildet ist; schrumpfen. Andere Definition von Böschung ist jede steile Steigung, wie eine, die von der Verwerfung resultiert. Escarpment ist auch ein steiler künstlicher Hang unmittelbar vor dem Wall eines befestigten Platzes.
