Torheit
In der Architektur ist eine Torheit ein Gebäude, das hauptsächlich für die Dekoration konstruiert ist, aber entweder durch sein Aussehen einen anderen Zweck oder nur so extravagant, dass es die normale Palette von Gartenschmuck oder andere Klasse des Gebäudes, zu der es gehört, übersteigt. In der ursprünglichen Verwendung des Wortes hatten diese Gebäude keinen anderen Gebrauch, aber vom 19. bis 20. Jahrhundert wurde der Begriff auch auf hochdekorative Gebäude angewendet, die sekundäre praktische Funktionen wie Wohnraum, Schutz oder geschäftliche Nutzung hatten. 18. Jh. Englische Gärten und französische Landschaftsgärten zeigten oft römische Tempel, die klassische Tugenden oder Ideale symbolisierten. Andere Gartenfassaden aus dem 18. Jahrhundert repräsentierten chinesische Tempel, ägyptische Pyramiden, zerstörte Abteien oder tatarische Zelte, um verschiedene Kontinente oder historische Epochen zu repräsentieren. Manchmal repräsentierten sie rustikale Dörfer, Mühlen und Cottages, um ländliche Tugenden zu symbolisieren. Viele Torheiten, besonders bei Hungersnot, wie die irische Kartoffel-Hungersnot, wurden als eine Form der armen Erleichterung gebaut, um die Beschäftigung für Bauern und arbeitslose Handwerker zu schaffen.
