Eine Geste ist eine Form der nonverbalen Kommunikation oder der nicht-stimmlichen Kommunikation, in der sichtbare körperliche Handlungen bestimmte Botschaften entweder anstelle von oder in Verbindung mit der Sprache vermitteln. Gesten gehören Bewegung der Hände, Gesicht oder andere Teile des Körpers. Gesten erlauben Einzelpersonen, eine Vielzahl von Gefühlen und Gedanken zu vermitteln, von Verachtung und Feindseligkeit zur Zustimmung und Zuneigung, oft zusammen mit Körpersprache zusätzlich zu den Wörtern, wenn sie sprechen. Die Gestenverarbeitung findet in Gebieten des Gehirns statt, wie etwa die Felder von Broca und Wernicke, die von Sprach- und Gebärdensprache verwendet werden. In der Tat ist die Sprache gedacht, sich aus manuellen Gesten entwickelt zu haben. Die Theorie, die die Sprache aus manuellen Gesten, die Gestaltentheorie, entstand, stammt aus dem Werk des Philosophen und Priesters Abbé de Condillac aus dem 18.
