Phosphoreszenz ist eine spezifische Art von Photolumineszenz im Zusammenhang mit Fluoreszenz. Im Gegensatz zu Fluoreszenz, ein phosphoreszierendes Material nicht sofort wieder emittieren die Strahlung, die es absorbiert. Die langsameren Zeitskalen der Reemission sind mit "verbotenen" Energiezustandsübergängen in der Quantenmechanik verbunden. Da diese Übergänge bei bestimmten Materialien sehr langsam vorkommen, kann die absorbierte Strahlung bei einer niedrigeren Intensität bis zu mehreren Stunden nach der ursprünglichen Anregung wieder emittiert werden. Häufig gesehene Beispiele für phosphoreszierende Materialien sind die Glow-in-the-Dark-Spielzeug-, Lack- und Zifferblätter, die für einige Zeit leuchten, nachdem sie mit einem hellen Licht wie bei jedem normalen Lesen oder Raumlicht aufgeladen wurden. Typischerweise verschwindet das Glühen dann langsam innerhalb von Minuten in einem dunklen Raum. Die Untersuchung von phosphoreszierenden Materialien führte zur Entdeckung der Radioaktivität im Jahre 1896. Ironischerweise zeigt der weiße Phosphor diese Eigenschaft nicht, sondern eher die Chemilumineszenz.
