Harlequin ist der bekannteste der Zanni oder Comic Diener Charaktere aus der italienischen Commedia dell'arte. Es wurde von dem erfolgreichen italienischen Schauspieler Tristano Martinelli in den 1580er Jahren eingeführt, und es wurde ein Lagercharakter nach Tristanos Tod im Jahre 1630. Später entwickelt er sich zu einem Prototyp des romantischen Helden. Harlequin erbt seine körperliche Beweglichkeit und seine Trickster-Qualitäten, sowie seinen Namen, von einem schelmischen "Teufel" Charakter in mittelalterlichen Leidenschaft spielt. Im viktorianischen England wurde der Harlekin routinemäßig mit der Clownfigur gepaart. Der Clown mit seiner Brutlichkeit fungierte als Folie für den anspruchsvolleren Harlekin.
