Jahrhunderts ermordet. Insgesamt wurden im Rahmen des Holocaust etwa 11 Millionen Menschen getötet, darunter über 1 Million Kinder. Von den neun Millionen Juden, die vor dem Holocaust in Europa gewohnt hatten, wurden etwa zwei Drittel getötet. Ein Netzwerk von rund 42.500 Einrichtungen in Deutschland und deutsch besetzten Gebieten wurde verwendet, um Juden und andere Opfer zu konzentrieren, zu beschränken und zu töten, und zwischen 100.000 und 500.000 Menschen waren direkte Teilnehmer an der Planung und Ermordung von Holocaustopfern. Die Verfolgung und der Völkermord wurden stufenweise durchgeführt. Zunächst hat die deutsche Regierung Gesetze verabschiedet, um Juden aus der Zivilgesellschaft auszuschließen, vor allem die Nürnberger Gesetze von 1935.
