Hunger
Hungersnot ist ein schwerer Mangel an kalorischer Energieaufnahme. Es ist die extremste Form der Unterernährung. Bei Menschen kann ein längerer Hunger zu bleibenden Orgelschäden und schließlich zum Tod führen. Der Begriff Inanition bezieht sich auf die Symptome und Auswirkungen des Hungers. Nach der Weltgesundheitsorganisation ist der Hunger die einzige ernste Bedrohung für die Gesundheit der Welt. Die WHO stellt auch fest, dass Unterernährung bei weitem der größte Beitrag zur Kindersterblichkeit ist, der in der Hälfte aller Fälle vorliegt. Die Undernutration ist ein Beitragsfaktor für den Tod von 3,1 Millionen Kindern unter fünf Jahren. Die Zahlen über die tatsächliche Hungersnot sind schwer zu bekommen, aber nach der Ernährungs- und Landwirtschaftsorganisation, die weniger schwere Bedingung der Unterernährung derzeit betrifft etwa 842 Millionen Menschen, oder etwa einer von acht Menschen in der Weltbevölkerung. Der aufgeblähte Magen, wie er im Bild rechts gesehen wird, stellt eine Form der Unterernährung dar, die Kwashiorkor genannt wird, die durch unzureichendes Protein trotz einer ausreichenden Kalorienzufuhr verursacht wird. Kinder sind anfälliger für Kwashiorkor, deren fortgeschrittene Symptome sind Gewichtsverlust und Muskel-Verschwendung.
