Ionien
Ionia ist eine alte Region der zentralen Küsten Anatolien in der heutigen Türkei, die Region am nächsten İzmir, die historisch Smyrna war. Es bestand aus den nördlichsten Gebieten der Ionischen Liga der griechischen Siedlungen. Niemals ein einheitlicher Staat, der nach dem Ionischen Stamm benannt wurde, der sich in der archaischen Zeit vor allem an den Ufern und Inseln der Ägäis niederließ. Ionische Staaten wurden durch Tradition und durch ihre Verwendung von östlichen griechischen identifiziert. Ionien bildeten einen schmalen Küstenstreifen von Phocaea im Norden nahe der Mündung des Flusses Hermus, zu Milet im Süden in der Nähe der Mündung des Maeanders und schlossen die Inseln Chios und Samos ein. Es wurde von Aeolia im Norden, Lydia im Osten und Caria im Süden begrenzt. Die Städte in der Region waren groß im Streit zwischen dem persischen Reich und den Griechen. Nach der griechischen Tradition wurden die Städte Ionien von Kolonisten aus der anderen Seite der Ägäis gegründet. Ihre Siedlung war mit der legendären Geschichte des Ionischen Volkes in Attika verbunden, was behauptet, dass die Kolonisten von Neleus und Androclus geführt wurden, Söhne von Codrus, dem letzten König von Athen.
