Katharevousa, ist eine konservative Form der modernen griechischen Sprache, die im frühen 19. Jahrhundert als Kompromiss zwischen dem Altgriechischen und dem Demotischen Griechischen der Zeit konzipiert wurde. Ursprünglich war es sowohl für literarische als auch für offizielle Zwecke weit verbreitet, wenn auch selten in der täglichen Sprache. Im 20. Jahrhundert wurde es zunehmend nur für offizielle und formale Zwecke angenommen, bis Demotic Greek 1976 die offizielle Sprache Griechenlands wurde und Andreas Papandreou das polytonische Schriftsystem im Jahre 1981 abgeschafft hat. Katharevousa wurde von dem intellektuellen und revolutionären Führer Adamantios Korais konzipiert . Ein Absolvent der Universität von Montpellier, Korais verbrachte den Großteil seines Lebens als Expatriate in Paris. Als klassischer Gelehrter wurde er von dem byzantinischen und späteren Einfluss auf die griechische Gesellschaft abgestoßen und war ein heftiger Kritiker des Klerus und ihrer angeblichen Unterwerfung des Osmanischen Reiches. Er hielt diese Erziehung als Voraussetzung für die griechische Befreiung. Ein Teil seines Ziels war es, den Kampf zwischen den "Archaisten" zu vermitteln, die die volle Umkehr zu archaischen Formen und die "Modernisten" begünstigten.

Katharevousa, is a conservative form of the Modern Greek language conceived in the early 19th century as a compromise between Ancient Greek and the Demotic Greek of the time. Originally, it was widely used both for literary and official purposes, though seldom in daily language. In the 20th century, it was increasingly adopted just for official and formal purposes, until Demotic Greek became the official language of Greece in 1976 and Andreas Papandreou abolished the polytonic system of writing in 1981. Katharevousa was conceived by the intellectual and revolutionary leader Adamantios Korais. A graduate of the University of Montpellier, Korais spent most of his life as an expatriate in Paris. Being a classical scholar, he was repelled by the Byzantine and later influence on Greek society and was a fierce critic of the clergy and their alleged subservience to the Ottoman Empire. He held that education was a prerequisite to Greek liberation. Part of its purpose was to mediate the struggle between the "archaists" favouring full reversion to archaic forms, and the "modernists".
