Die Lamiaceae oder Labiatae sind eine Blütenpflanze. Sie wurden traditionell als eng verwandt mit Verbenaceae betrachtet, aber in den 1990er Jahren schlugen phylogenetische Studien vor, dass viele Gattungen, die in Verbenaceae eingestuft wurden, stattdessen in Lamiaceae gehören. Die derzeit akzeptierte Version der Verbenaceae kann nicht näher mit Lamiaceae verwandt sein als einige der anderen Familien in der Reihenfolge Lamiales. Es ist noch nicht bekannt, welche der Familien in Lamiales Lamiaceae am nächsten ist. Die Familie hat eine kosmopolitische Verteilung. Die vergrößerte Lamiaceae enthält etwa 236 Gattungen und 6.900 bis 7.200 Arten. Die größten Gattungen sind Salvia, Scutellaria, Stachys, Plectranthus, Hyptis, Teucrium, Vitex, Thymus und Nepeta. Clerodendrum war einst eine Gattung von über 400 Arten, aber bis 2010 war es auf etwa 150 verengt worden. Die Pflanzen sind häufig in allen Teilen aromatisch und umfassen viele weit verbreitete kulinarische Kräuter wie Basilikum, Minze, Rosmarin, Salbei, Bohnenkraut, Majoran, Oregano, Hyssop, Thymian, Lavendel und Perilla. Einige sind Sträucher; Bäume wie Teakholz; Oder selten, Reben.
