Silphium
Silphium war eine Pflanze, die in der Antike als reiche Würze und als Medizin verwendet wurde. Es war das wesentliche Handelswesen aus der alten nordafrikanischen Stadt Cyrene und war für die Kyrensche Wirtschaft so kritisch, dass die meisten ihrer Münzen ein Bild von der Pflanze trug. Das wertvolle Produkt war das Harz der Pflanze. Silphium war eine wichtige Art in der Vorgeschichte, wie die Ägypter und Knossos Minoans, die eine spezifische Glyphe zur Vertretung der Silphium-Pflanze. Es wurde von den meisten uralten Mittelmeerkulturen weit verbreitet; Die Römer betrachteten es als "wert sein Gewicht in denarii". Die Legende sagte, dass es ein Geschenk vom Gott Apollo war.
