Die Magnetisierung innerhalb jeder Domäne zeigt in einer gleichmäßigen Richtung, aber die Magnetisierung verschiedener Domänen kann in verschiedene Richtungen zeigen. Die magnetische Domänenstruktur ist verantwortlich für das magnetische Verhalten von ferromagnetischen Materialien wie Eisen, Nickel, Kobalt und deren Legierungen, Ferriten etc. wie die Bildung von Permanentmagneten. Die Bereiche, die magnetische Domänen trennen, werden Domänenwände genannt, wobei die Magnetisierung kohärent von der Richtung in einer Domäne zu der in der nächsten Domäne rotiert. Das Studium der magnetischen Domänen heißt Mikromagnetik.
