Bei Wirbeltieren ist der Unterkiefer, Unterkiefer oder Kieferknochen ein Knochen, der den Schädel mit dem Schädel bildet. Bei knusprigen Fischen und den frühen fossilen Tetrapoden ist der Knochen, der zum Unterkiefer von Säugetieren homolog ist, nur der größte von mehreren Knochen im Unterkiefer. Bei solchen Tieren wird es als der Zahnkopfknochen bezeichnet und bildet den Körper der äußeren Oberfläche des Kiefers. Es grenzt unten durch eine Anzahl von Sumpfknochen, während der Winkel des Kiefers durch einen unteren Winkelknochen und einen suprangulären Knochen gerade darüber gebildet wird. Die innere Oberfläche des Kiefers ist von einem präartikulären Knochen ausgekleidet, während der Gelenkknochen die Artikulation mit dem eigentlichen Schädel bildet. Schließlich liegt ein Satz von drei schmalen Koronoidknochen oberhalb des präartikulären Knochens. Wie der Name schon sagt, ist die Mehrheit der Zähne am Zahnarzt befestigt, aber es gibt gewöhnlich auch Zähne auf den koronoiden Knochen, und manchmal auch auf der Vorart. Dieses komplexe primitive Muster ist jedoch in der großen Mehrheit der Wirbeltiere in verschiedenen Graden vereinfacht worden, da die Knochen entweder ganz verschmolzen oder verschwunden sind.
