Massiv
In der Geologie ist ein Massiv ein Abschnitt der Kruste eines Planeten, der durch Fehler oder Biegungen abgegrenzt wird. Bei der Bewegung der Kruste neigt ein Massiv dazu, seine innere Struktur zu behalten, während er als Ganzes vertrieben wird. Der Begriff wird auch verwendet, um sich auf eine Gruppe von Bergen zu beziehen, die durch eine solche Struktur gebildet werden. In Bergsteigen und Kletterliteratur wird häufig ein Massiv verwendet, um die Hauptmasse eines einzelnen Berges zu bezeichnen. Das Massiv ist eine kleinere Struktureinheit der Kruste als eine tektonische Platte und gilt als die viertgrößte treibende Kraft in der Geomorphologie. Das Wort ist aus dem Französischen genommen, wo es sich um eine große Bergmasse oder eine kompakte Gruppe von verbundenen Bergen handelt, die einen unabhängigen Teil einer Reihe bilden. Eines der bemerkenswertesten europäischen Beispiele für ein Massiv ist das Massif Central der Auvergne in Frankreich. Das Gesicht auf dem Mars ist ein Beispiel für ein außerirdisches Massiv. Massive können auch unter Wasser wie mit dem Atlantis Massif bilden.
