Nicaea
Nicaea war eine griechische Stadt im nordwestlichen Anatolien und ist vor allem als der Ort der Ersten und Zweiten Räte von Nicaea, das Nicene Creed und als die Hauptstadt des Reiches von Nicaea nach dem Vierten Kreuzzug im Jahre 1204 bekannt, bis die Wiedereroberung von Konstantinopel von den Byzantinern im Jahre 1261. Die antike Stadt liegt im modernen Iznik, Türkei, und liegt in einem fruchtbaren Becken am östlichen Ende des Ascanius-Sees, der von Hügeln im Norden und Süden begrenzt ist. Es liegt mit seiner Westseite, die vom See selbst aufsteigt, indem sie sowohl den Schutz vor Belagerung aus dieser Richtung als auch eine Quelle von Vorräten bietet, die schwer abzuschneiden wäre. Der See ist groß genug, dass es nicht aus dem Land leicht blockiert werden konnte, und die Stadt war groß genug, um jeden Versuch, den Hafen von Ufer-Belagerungswaffen zu erreichen, sehr schwierig zu machen. Die antike Stadt ist von allen Seiten von 5 km von ca. 10 m hohen Mauern umgeben. Diese sind wiederum von einem Doppelgraben an den Landabschnitten umgeben und beinhalten auch über 100 Türme an verschiedenen Orten. Große Tore auf den drei landgebundenen Seiten der Wände bildeten den einzigen Eingang zur Stadt.
