Orcein, auch archil, orchil, lacmus und C.I. Natural Red 28, sind Namen für Farbstoffe aus verschiedenen Arten von Flechten, allgemein bekannt als "Orchella Unkraut", in verschiedenen Teilen der Welt gefunden. Eine Hauptquelle ist die archil Flechte, Roccella tinctoria. Orcinol wird aus solchen Flechten extrahiert. Es wird dann durch Ammoniak und Luft in Orcein umgewandelt. Bei herkömmlichen Farbstoffherstellungsmethoden wurde Urin als Ammoniakquelle verwendet. Wenn die Umwandlung in Gegenwart von Kaliumcarbonat, Calciumhydroxid und Calciumsulfat durchgeführt wird, ist das Ergebnis Lackmus, ein komplexeres Molekül. Die Herstellung wurde von Cocq im Jahre 1812 und im Vereinigten Königreich im Jahre 1874 beschrieben. Roberts bemerkte Orchilla als Hauptausfuhr der Kapverdischen Inseln, überlegen der gleichen Art von Moos in Italien oder den Kanaren gefunden, dass im Jahr 1832 gab einen jährlichen Umsatz Von $ 200.000.: Pp.14,15 Handels-Archil ist entweder ein Pulver oder eine Paste. Es ist rot im sauren pH-Wert und blau im alkalischen pH-Wert. Orcein ist als Lebensmittelfarbstoff zugelassen, mit E-Nummer E121 vor 1977 und E182 nach. Seine CAS-Nummer ist 1400-62-0. Seine chemische Formel ist C28H24N2O7. Es bildet dunkelbraune Kristalle.
