Neoteny, auch juvenilisierung genannt, ist eine der beiden Möglichkeiten, durch die paedomorphismus entstehen kann. Paedomorphismus oder paedomorphosis ist die Beibehaltung von Erwachsenen von Merkmalen, die bisher nur bei den Jungen gesehen wurden, und ist ein Fachgebiet, das auf dem Gebiet der Entwicklungsbiologie studiert wurde. In neoteny wird die physiologische Entwicklung eines Organismus verlangsamt oder verzögert. Im Gegensatz dazu tritt bei der Progenese die sexuelle Entwicklung schneller auf. Beide Prozesse führen zu paedomorphism, eine Art von Heterochronie. Letztlich führt dieser Prozeß dazu, daß bei den Erwachsenen einer Spezies juvenile physikalische Eigenschaften bis zur Reife und Pedogenese, die Reproduktion in einem neotenisierten Zustand, zurückgehalten wird. Neoteny ist eine von drei Dimensionen von heterochrony oder die zeitliche Änderung von Entwicklungsereignissen: Beschleunigung vs. Neoteny, Hypermorphose gegen Progenese und Vorverdichtung gegen Nachverlagerung. Das Wort neoteny ist von der deutschen Neotenie geliehen, die letzteren aus dem griechischen νέος und τείνειν gebaut. Die Adjektivform des Wortes ist entweder "neotisch" oder "neotisch".

Neoteny, also called juvenilization, is one of the two ways by which paedomorphism can arise. Paedomorphism or paedomorphosis is the retention by adults of traits previously seen only in the young, and is a subject studied in the field of developmental biology. In neoteny, the physiological development of an organism is slowed or delayed. In contrast, in progenesis, sexual development occurs faster. Both processes result in paedomorphism, a type of heterochrony. Ultimately this process results in the retention, in the adults of a species, of juvenile physical characteristics well into maturity and pedogenesis, the reproduction in a neotenized state. Neoteny is one of three dimensions of heterochrony, or the change in timing of developmental events: acceleration vs. neoteny, hypermorphosis vs. progenesis, and predisplacement vs. postdisplacement. The word neoteny is borrowed from the German Neotenie, the latter constructed from the Greek νέος and τείνειν. The adjective form of the word is either "neotenic" or "neotenous".
