Periplus
Periplus ist die Latinisierung des griechischen Wortes περίπλους, buchstäblich "ein Segeln". Beide Segmente, peri- und -plose, waren unabhängig produktiv: Der antike griechische Sprecher verstand das Wort im wörtlichen Sinne; Jedoch entwickelte es ein paar spezialisierte Bedeutungen, von denen einer ein Standardbegriff in der alten Schifffahrt von Phöniziern, Griechen und Römern wurde. Ein Periplus war ein Manuskript-Dokument, das in der Reihenfolge der Häfen und Küsten-Landmarken mit ungefähre dazwischenliegende Distanzen aufgeführt wurde, die der Kapitän eines Schiffes erwarten könnte, an einem Ufer zu finden. Es diente dem gleichen Zweck wie das spätere römische itinerarium der Straßenanschläge; Die griechischen Navigatoren fügten jedoch verschiedene Notizen hinzu, die, wenn es sich um professionelle Geographen handelte, Teil ihrer eigenen Ergänzungen zur griechischen Geographie wurden. In diesem Sinne war der Periplus eine Art Log. Die Form des Periplus ist wenigstens so alt wie der früheste griechische Historiker, der Ionische Hecataeus von Milet. Die Werke von Herodot und Thukydides enthalten Passagen, die auf Peripli basieren.
