Physiognomie
Physiognomie ist die Beurteilung des Charakteres oder der Persönlichkeit eines Menschen aus seinem äußeren Erscheinungsbild, vor allem das Gesicht. Der Begriff kann sich auch auf das allgemeine Erscheinungsbild einer Person, eines Objekts oder eines Terrains beziehen, ohne sich auf seine impliziten Eigenschaften zu beziehen, wie in der Physiognomie einer Pflanzengemeinschaft. Die Glaubwürdigkeit dieser Studie hat sich von Zeit zu Zeit verändert. Die Praxis wurde von den antiken griechischen Philosophen gut angenommen, fiel aber im Mittelalter in Verachtung, wenn sie von Vagabunden und Mountebanken praktiziert wurde. Es wurde dann von Johann Kaspar Lavater wiederbelebt und populär, bevor er im späten 19. Jahrhundert wieder von der Gunst kam. Die in der Vergangenheit verstandene Physiognomie trifft auf die zeitgenössische Definition einer Pseudowissenschaft. Kein eindeutiger Beweis deutet auf Physiognomie-Arbeiten hin, obwohl neuere Studien darauf hingewiesen haben, dass Gesichtsauftritte "einen Kern der Wahrheit" über die Persönlichkeit einer Person enthalten. Die Physiognomie wird auch manchmal als Anthroposkopie bezeichnet, obwohl der Ausdruck im 19. Jahrhundert häufiger war, als das Wort entstand.
