Polyurethan
Polyurethan ist ein Polymer, das aus einer Kette von organischen Einheiten besteht, die durch Carbamatverbindungen verbunden sind. Während die meisten Polyurethane wärmehärtbare Polymere sind, die beim Erwärmen nicht schmelzen, sind auch thermoplastische Polyurethane erhältlich. Polyurethanpolymere werden traditionell und am häufigsten durch Umsetzung eines Di- oder Polyisocyanats mit einem Polyol gebildet. Sowohl die zur Herstellung von Polyurethanen verwendeten Isocyanate und Polyole enthalten im Mittel zwei oder mehr funktionelle Gruppen pro Molekül. Einige bemerkenswerte jüngste Bemühungen wurden der Minimierung der Verwendung von Isocyanaten zur Synthese von Polyurethanen gewidmet, da die Isocyanate schwere Toxizitätsprobleme hervorrufen. Nicht-Isocyanat-basierte Polyurethane wurden kürzlich als neue Klasse von Polyurethan-Polymeren entwickelt, um Gesundheits- und Umweltbelange zu verringern. Polyurethan-Produkte werden oft einfach als "Urethane" bezeichnet, sollten aber nicht mit Ethylcarbamat verwechselt werden, das auch als Urethan bezeichnet wird. Polyurethane enthalten weder noch aus Ethylcarbamat.
