Eine Prämisse oder Prämisse ist eine Aussage, dass ein Argument behauptet, eine Schlussfolgerung zu veranlassen oder zu rechtfertigen. Mit anderen Worten: eine Prämisse ist eine Annahme, dass etwas wahr ist. In der Logik erfordert ein Argument eine Reihe von zwei deklarativen Sätzen, die als Räumlichkeiten bekannt sind, zusammen mit einem anderen deklarativen Satz, der als Schlussfolgerung bekannt ist. Diese Struktur von zwei Prämissen und einer Schlussfolgerung bildet die grundlegende Argumentationsstruktur. Komplexere Argumente können eine Reihe von Regeln verwenden, um mehrere Räumlichkeiten mit einer Schlussfolgerung zu verbinden oder eine Reihe von Schlussfolgerungen aus den ursprünglichen Räumlichkeiten abzuleiten, die dann als Räumlichkeiten für weitere Schlussfolgerungen dienen. Ein Beispiel hierfür ist die Verwendung der in der symbolischen Logik gefundenen Regeln der Schlussfolgerung. Aristoteles hielt fest, dass jedes logische Argument auf zwei Räumlichkeiten und eine Schlussfolgerung reduziert werden könnte. Räumlichkeiten sind manchmal unbeständig, in welchem Fall sie fehlende Prämissen genannt werden, zum Beispiel: Sokrates ist sterblich, weil alle Männer sterblich sind. Es ist offensichtlich, dass ein stillschweigend verstandener Anspruch ist, dass Sokrates ein Mann ist. Das vollkommene Argument ist also: Weil alle Menschen sterblich sind und Sokrates ein Mann ist, ist Sokrates sterblich.
