In der Geschichte von England und Wales war die Wiederherstellung der Zustand derer, die sich weigerten, anglikanische Dienste zu besuchen; Diese Personen wurden als Rezeptoren bekannt. Der Begriff, der sich letztlich aus dem lateinischen Rezidiv ergibt, wurde zuerst verwendet, um sich auf diejenigen zu beziehen, die der römisch-katholischen Kirche treu blieben und nicht an die Dienste des Gottesdienstes teilnahmen, mit einem Satz von 1593, der die Strafen gegen "Popish-Rekondanten" festlegte. Die "Recusancy Acts" begannen während der Regierungszeit von Elizabeth I. und wurden im Jahre 1650 aufgehoben. Sie verhängten verschiedene Arten von Strafe für diejenigen, die nicht an anglikanischen religiösen Aktivitäten teilnahmen, wie Geldstrafen, Eigentum Entziehung und Freiheitsstrafe. Trotz ihrer Aufhebung waren die Beschränkungen gegen die römischen Katholiken bis zur vollen katholischen Emanzipation im Jahre 1829 noch vorhanden. In manchen Fällen standen die Katholizisten an, die einer Todesstrafe ausgesetzt waren, und eine Reihe von englischen und walisischen Katholiken, die im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert hingerichtet wurden, wurden von der Kanzlei kanonisiert Katholische Kirche als christliche Märtyrer.
