Ein Alphabet ist ein Standardsatz von Buchstaben, der verwendet wird, um eine oder mehrere Sprachen zu schreiben, die auf dem allgemeinen Prinzip basieren, dass die Buchstaben Phoneme der gesprochenen Sprache darstellen. Dies steht im Gegensatz zu anderen Arten von Schriftsystemen wie Silben und Logographien. Ein wahres Alphabet hat Briefe für die Vokale einer Sprache sowie der Konsonanten. Das erste "wahre Alphabet" in diesem Sinne ist vermutlich das griechische Alphabet, das eine modifizierte Form des phönizischen Alphabets ist. Bei anderen Arten von Alphabet sind entweder die Vokale überhaupt nicht angedeutet, wie es bei dem phönizischen Alphabet der Fall war, sonst sind die Vokale durch diakritische Zeichen oder Modifikationen von Konsonanten gezeigt, wie bei den in Indien und Nepal verwendeten Devanagari. Es gibt Dutzende von Alphabete im Einsatz heute, die beliebtesten ist das lateinische Alphabet. Viele Sprachen verwenden modifizierte Formen des lateinischen Alphabets, wobei zusätzliche Buchstaben mit diakritischen Zeichen gebildet werden. Während die meisten Alphabete Briefe aus Linien haben, gibt es auch Ausnahmen wie die Alphabete in Blindenschrift, Fingerspelling und Morse-Code verwendet. Alphabete sind in der Regel mit einer Standard-Bestellung ihrer Buchstaben verbunden.
