Eine kurze Geschichte ist eine kurze Arbeit der Literatur, die gewöhnlich in der erzählerischen Prosa geschrieben ist. Ausgehend von früheren mündlichen Geschichtenerzählungen im 17. Jahrhundert hat sich die Kurzgeschichte dazu veranlasst, eine so vielfältige Arbeit zu vermitteln, die der leichten Charakterisierung entgeht. Bei den meisten Prototypen spielt die Kurzgeschichte eine kleine Besetzung von Namensschildern und konzentriert sich auf einen eigenständigen Vorfall mit der Absicht, einen "einzigen Effekt" oder eine Stimmung zu erwecken. Dabei machen Kurzgeschichten Handlung, Resonanz und andere dynamische Komponenten weitaus stärker als für eine Anekdote typisch, aber weit weniger als ein Roman. Während die Kurzgeschichte weitgehend von dem Roman abhängt, zeichnen sich Autoren von beiden im Allgemeinen aus einem gemeinsamen literarischen Beamten. Kurzgeschichten haben keine festgelegte Länge. In der Wortzählung gibt es keine offizielle Abgrenzung zwischen einer Anekdote, einer Kurzgeschichte und einem Roman. Vielmehr werden die Parameter der Form durch den rhetorischen und praktischen Kontext gegeben, in dem eine gegebene Geschichte produziert und betrachtet wird, so dass das, was eine kurze Geschichte darstellt, sich zwischen Genres, Ländern, Epochen und Kommentatoren unterscheiden kann.

In all honesty, at that time, I never saw myself as an author... I was just a Mom in a state of panic, trying to enter a short story contest to win the prize money in order to keep the lights on in my home.
The short story is a very natural mode of storytelling; most stories can be told quickly. I always think of them as like a tightrope walk - every sentence is a step along the rope, and you can so easily misplace your step and break your neck.
What greatly annoys me is sometimes you see the short story being described as a training ground for the novel. Kind of like an apprenticeship. And in lots of ways, it's a far harder form.
For me, the short story is the depth of a novel, the breadth of a poem, and, as you come to the last few paragraphs, the experience of surprise.
I worked on 'Blue Peter' and 'Tonight' and lots of TV plays, filmed people like Rudolf Nureyev and Ted Heath, and ended up a senior cameraman with my own crew. I'd had my first short story published in 1947, and when my writing really started to take off I decided to go freelance, and eventually left the BBC in 1965.
I think it's a short story writer's duty, as well as writing well about emotions and characters, to write story.
Well, to be honest I think I'm a better short story writer than a novelist. Novels I find very hard, hours and hours, weeks and weeks, of conscious thought - whereas short stories slip out painlessly in a few days.
The hardest thing about writing a script is you finish it, but it doesn't mean anything. It's not like a novel or short story - a script is meant to be made into a movie.
A novel requires a certain kind of world-building and also a certain kind of closure, ultimately. Whereas with a short story you have this sense that there are hinges that the reader doesn't see.
I used to write things for friends. There was this girl I had a crush on, and she had a teacher she didn't like at school. I had a real crush on her, so almost every day I would write her a little short story where she would kill him in a different way.
