Sirenia
Die Sirenia ist eine Ordnung von voll aquatischen, pflanzenfressenden Säugetieren, die Sümpfe, Flüsse, Flussmündungen, Meeresfeuchtgebiete und Küstengewässer bewohnen. Vier Arten leben, in zwei Familien und Gattungen. Das sind die Dugong und Manatees. Sirenia auch Steller's Seekuh, ausgestorben seit dem 18. Jahrhundert, und eine Reihe von Taxa nur aus Fossilien bekannt. Der Auftrag entwickelte sich während des Eozäns vor mehr als 50 Millionen Jahren. Sirenia, gewöhnlich Sirenen, werden auch von den Namen der Sirenen bezeichnet, die aus den Sirenen der griechischen Mythologie stammen. Das kommt von einer Legende über ihre Entdeckung, die einsame Matrosen, die sie für Meerjungfrauen verwechseln. "Seekuh" ist auch der Name für ein Flusspferd in Afrikaans. In germanischen Sprachen kann das Wort See entweder einen Körper von frischem oder Salzwasser bedeuten, so folgt dies aus der Art, die Seen im südlichen Afrika anstatt das Meer selbst bewohnt.
