Soma
Soma oder Haoma aus dem Proto-Indo-Iranischen * sauma, war ein vedisches Ritualgetränk von Bedeutung unter den frühen Indo-Iranern und den darauffolgenden vedischen und größeren persischen Kulturen. Es wird häufig in der Rigveda erwähnt, deren Soma Mandala 114 Hymnen enthält, viele loben ihre energetischen Qualitäten. In der Avesta hat Haoma die ganze Yašt 20 und Yasna 9-11 gewidmet. Es wird als vorbereitet durch Extraktion von Saft aus den Stielen einer bestimmten Pflanze beschrieben. Sowohl in der vedischen als auch in der zoroastrischen Tradition sind der Name des Getränks und der Pflanze gleich und auch als Göttlichkeit verkörpert, wobei die drei eine religiöse oder mythologische Einheit bilden. Es gab viel Spekulationen darüber, was am wahrscheinlichsten die Identität der ursprünglichen Pflanze gewesen ist. Es gibt keinen festen Konsens über die Frage, obwohl einige westliche Experten außerhalb der vedischen und avestanischen religiösen Traditionen nun eine Art von Ephedra, vielleicht Ephedra sinica, zu bevorzugen scheinen.
