Spider Affen der Gattung Ateles sind New World Affen in der Unterfamilie Atelinae, Familie Atelidae. Wie andere Atelinen finden sie auch in tropischen Wäldern Mittel- und Südamerikas, von Süd-Mexiko bis Brasilien. Die Gattung enthält sieben Arten, die alle bedroht sind; Der schwarzköpfige Spinnenaffe und der braune Spinnenaffe sind bedroht. Unveränderlich lange Glieder und lange Greifschwänze machen sie zu einem der größten New-World-Affen und geben ihren gemeinsamen Namen. Spinnenaffen leben in den oberen Schichten des Regenwaldes und Futter in der hohen Baldachin, von 25 bis 30 m. Sie essen vor allem Früchte, werden aber auch gelegentlich Blätter, Blüten und Insekten verbrauchen. Aufgrund ihrer großen Größe benötigen Spinnenaffen große Traktate von feuchten, immergrünen Wäldern und bevorzugen ungestörten Primärregenwald. Sie sind soziale Tiere und leben in Bands von bis zu 35 Personen, aber werden sich bis zum Futter während des Tages aufteilen. Aktuelle Meta-Analysen zu Primaten-Kognitionsstudien zeigten, dass Spinnenaffen die intelligentesten New-World-Affen sind.
