Squire ist eine verkürzte Version des Wortes Esquire, von der alten französischen Escuier, die sich selbst aus dem späten lateinischen Scutarius, im mittelalterlichen oder alten Englisch ein Scutifer abgeleitet hat. Das klassische lateinische Äquivalent war armiger, "Waffenhalter".
