Sulu-Archipel
Das Sulu-Archipel ist eine Kette von Inseln im Pazifischen Ozean, im Südwesten der Philippinen. Das Archipel bildet die nördliche Grenze des Celebes-Meeres und die südliche Grenze des Sulu-Meeres. Die Sulu-Archipel-Inseln befinden sich in der Region Mindanao, in den Provinzen Basilan, Sulu oder Tawi-Tawi. Der Archipel ist nicht, wie man vermutet, die Überreste einer Landbrücke zwischen Borneo und den Philippinen. Vielmehr ist es die exponierte Kante der kleinen U-Boot-Kämme, die durch das tektonische Kippen des Meeresgrundes Basilan, Jolo und andere Inseln in der Gruppe produziert werden, sind ausgestorbene vulkanische Kegel, die vom südlichsten Grat aufsteigen. Tawi-Tawi, die südlichste Insel der Gruppe, hat einen Serpentin-Keller-Komplex-Kern mit einer Kalkstein-Abdeckung. Diese Inselkette ist eine wichtige Migrationsroute für Vögel. Die größten Städte in der Gegend sind auf Maimbung und Jolo Inseln. Die größere Insel Palawan im Norden, die Küstenregionen der westwärts verlaufenden Zamboanga-Halbinsel von Mindanao und der nördliche Teil der Insel Borneo waren früher Teile des thalassokratischen Sultanats von Sulu und North Borneo.
