Euroskeptiker argumentieren, dass die Europäische Union ein aktuelles Beispiel für einen aufkommenden Superstaat ist. Multinationale Staaten wie Kanada und die Russische Föderation gelten nicht als Superstaaten. Die ehemalige Sowjetunion, obwohl sie konstitutionell als Vereinigung der Republiken definiert wurde, war de facto ein Superstatter aufgrund einer großen kulturellen und sprachlichen Vielfalt zwischen ihren bewohnten Ethnien, niemals wirklich identifiziert sich als die einzige sowjetische Nation trotz der offiziellen Doktrin.
