Das Telex-Netzwerk ist ein geschaltetes Netz von Teleprintern ähnlich einem Telefonnetz, zum Zwecke des Sendens von textbasierten Nachrichten. Der Begriff bezieht sich auf das Netzwerk, nicht auf die Fernschreiber; Punkt-zu-Punkt-Teleprinter-Systeme waren in Gebrauch gewesen, lange bevor Telex-Börsen gebildet wurden, beginnend in den 1930er Jahren. Teleprinter entwickelten sich aus Telegraphen-Systemen, und wie der Telegraph nutzten sie die Anwesenheit oder Abwesenheit eines vordefinierten Strompegels, um die Mark- oder Raumsymbole darzustellen. Dies ist im Gegensatz zu dem analogen Telefonsystem, das unterschiedliche Spannungen verwendet, um Frequenzinformationen zu codieren. Aus diesem Grund waren die Telex-Börsen vollständig von der Telefonanlage getrennt, mit eigenen Signalisierungsstandards, Austausch und System von "Telex-Nummern". Wenn Telefon- und Telexaustauschgeräte zusammengelegt wurden, was nicht ungewöhnlich war, würden die verschiedenen Signalisierungssysteme manchmal Störungen verursachen. Telex lieferte das erste gemeinsame Medium für internationale Rekordkommunikation unter Verwendung von Standard-Signalisierungstechniken und Betriebskriterien, wie es von der International Telecommunication Union angegeben wurde.
