In der analytischen Chemie ist ein Spurenelement ein Element in einer Probe, das eine durchschnittliche Konzentration von weniger als 100 Teilen pro Million hat, gemessen in einer Atomzahl oder weniger als 100 Mikrogramm pro Gramm. In der Biochemie ist ein Spurenelement ein diätetisches Mineral, das in sehr geringen Mengen für das richtige Wachstum, die Entwicklung und die Physiologie des Organismus benötigt wird. In der Geochemie ist ein Spurenelement ein chemisches Element, dessen Konzentration weniger als 1000 ppm oder 0,1% einer Gesteinszusammensetzung beträgt. Der Begriff wird vorwiegend in der igneous petrologie verwendet. Spurenelemente werden entweder flüssige oder feste Phase bevorzugen. Wenn es mit einem Mineral kompatibel ist, wird es eine feste Phase bevorzugen. Wenn es mit einem Element nicht kompatibel ist, wird es eine flüssige Phase bevorzugen. Die Messung dieses Verhältnisses ist als Verteilungskoeffizient bekannt. Spurenelemente können für netzbildende Kationen in mineralischen Strukturen eingesetzt werden. Minerale müssen keine Spurenelemente enthalten, d.h. sie müssen nicht in der chemischen Formel des Minerals erscheinen. Bei der Ausübung der biologisch-dynamischen Landwirtschaft ist es wichtig, die Spurenelemente des Bodens zu nutzen, um den Wurzeln Kraft zu verleihen.
