John Vanbrugh
Sir John Vanbrugh (/ vænbrə / 24. Januar 1664 (getauft) - 26. März 1726) war ein englischer Architekt und Dramatiker, vielleicht bekannt als der Designer des Blenheim Palace und Castle Howard. Er schrieb zwei argumentative und freimütige Restaurationskomödien, The Relapse (1696) und The Provoked Wife (1697), die zu dauerhaften Bühnenfavoriten geworden sind, aber ursprünglich viel Kontroversen verursacht haben. Er wurde 1714 gezüchtigt. Vanbrugh war in vielen Sinnen ein radikaler während seines ganzen Lebens. Als junger Mann und ein engagierter Whig war er Teil des Schemas, James II zu stürzen, William III auf den Thron zu stellen und die englische parlamentarische Demokratie zu schützen, und er wurde von den Franzosen als politischer Gefangener eingesperrt. In seiner Karriere als Dramatiker beleidigte er viele Abschnitte der Wiederherstellung und die Gesellschaft des 18. Jahrhunderts, nicht nur durch die sexuelle Explizite seiner Stücke, sondern auch durch ihre Botschaften zur Verteidigung der Frauenrechte in der Ehe. Er wurde in beiden Punkten angegriffen und war eines der Hauptziele von Jeremy Colliers Kurzer Blick auf die Unmoral und Profaneness der englischen Bühne. In seiner architektonischen Karriere schuf er, was als englisches Barock bekannt wurde.
