Virgil
Publius Vergilius Maro, gewöhnlich Virgil oder Vergil / vɜrdʒəl / in Englisch genannt, war ein alter römischer Dichter der Augustuszeit. Er ist bekannt für drei große Werke der lateinischen Literatur, die Ekloge, die Georgik und die epische Aeneid. Eine Reihe von kleinen Gedichten, die im Anhang Vergiliana gesammelt wurden, werden ihm manchmal zugeschrieben. Virgil wird traditionell als einer der größten Dichter Roms eingestuft. Sein Aeneid wurde von der Zeit seiner Komposition bis zum heutigen Tag als das nationale Epos des alten Rom angesehen. Modelliert nach Homer's Ilias und Odyssee, folgt die Aeneid dem trojanischen Flüchtling Aeneas, während er kämpft, um sein Schicksal zu erfüllen und an den Ufern von Italien zu kommen - in der römischen Mythologie der Gründungsakt von Rom. Virgils Arbeit hatte einen breiten und tiefen Einfluß auf die westliche Literatur, vor allem die göttliche Komödie von Dante, in der Virgil als Dantes Führer durch Hölle und Fegefeuer erscheint.
