Holzschnitt
Holzschnitt - gelegentlich als Xylographie bekannt - ist ein Reliefdruck künstlerische Technik in der Druckgrafik, bei der ein Bild in die Oberfläche eines Holzblocks gehauen wird, wobei die Druckteile mit der Oberfläche verbleiben, während die nicht druckenden Teile entfernt werden, typischerweise mit Gouges Die Bereiche, die "weiß" zeigen, werden mit einem Messer oder Meißel weggeschnitten, so dass die Zeichen oder das Bild in "schwarz" auf der ursprünglichen Oberflächenebene zu zeigen. Der Block wird über das Holzkorn geschnitten. Die Oberfläche wird mit Tinte bedeckt, indem sie mit einer mit einer Tinte bedeckten Rolle über die Oberfläche rollt, wobei Tinte auf die ebene Fläche zurückbleibt, aber nicht in den nicht druckenden Bereichen. Mehrere Farben können gedruckt werden, indem das Papier auf einen Rahmen um die Holzblöcke gedrückt wird. Die Kunst, den Holzschnitt zu schnitzen, kann man "Xylographie" nennen, aber das wird nur selten für alleine in englischer Sprache verwendet, obwohl das und "xylographisch" in Verbindung mit Blockbüchern verwendet werden, die kleine Bücher mit Text und Bildern im selben Block sind. Einblatt-Holzschnitt ist ein Begriff für einen Holzschnitt, der als einzelnes Bild oder Druck dargestellt wird, im Gegensatz zu einer Buchillustration.
