Camat ialah ketua kecamatan yang berkedudukan di bawah dan bertanggungjawab kepada Bupati melalui Setiausaha Kabupaten/Kota. Beliau dilantik daripada para pegawai perkhidmatan awam Kabupaten/Kota yang memenuhi syarat oleh Bupati/Walikota atas cadangan Setiausaha Daerah Kabupaten/Kota. Tugas Camat adalah sebagai penyeleras pemerintahan yang melaksanakan tugas-tugasnya di bawah bidang kuasa Bupati, sesuai dengan keperluan kecamatannya, serta juga kegiatan-kegiatan pemerintahan yang lain berdasarkan Peraturan Perundangan. Seorang Camat membawahkan Lurah, tetapi tidak membawahkan Kepala Desa.
