Lingua franca - im engeren Sinne: Die im Mittelmeer verwendete gemischte Sprache des Pidgin-Typs mit reduzierter Flexion und Grammatik basierte hauptsächlich auf verbal vorwiegend aus der französischen, italienischen, griechischen, spanischen und arabischen Sprache. In den Mittelmeerhäfen im 20. Jahrhundert, vor allem in Handels- und diplomatischen Kontakten eingesetzt, ist jetzt eine tote Sprache. Der Begriff lingua franca wurde ursprünglich von den Arabern verwendet und repräsentierte jede Sprache, die aus dem Lateinischen und insbesondere aus dem Italienischen stammt.
