Ergosterol wird auch als Verflüssiger in den Zellmembranen einiger Protisten wie dem Trypanosom verwendet. Amphotericin B ist ein Antipilzmittel, das auf Ergosterol abzielt. Es bindet an das Estersterol und erzeugt eine polare Pore in den Membranen. Dies führt dazu, dass Ionen und mehrere Moleküle die Zelle verlassen und sterben.

Liga-se ao esgosterol e cria um poro polar nas membranas. Isto faz com que iões e diversas moléculas saiam da célula, provocando a sua morte.
