Para ist eine von 27 brasilianischen Föderationseinheiten. Die Hauptstadt des Staates ist die Stadt Belém. Pará grenzt im Norden an Amapá Föderative Einheit, Surinam und Guyana im Nordwesten, Roraima und Amazonas Föderative Einheiten im Westen, Mato Grosso im Süden, Tocantins und Maranhão im Osten. Die Föderationseinheit hat auch einen Atlantikausgang. Im Jahr 2008 hatte der Staat eine Bevölkerung von 7.321.493 und eine Fläche von 1.247.689,52 km², aufgeteilt in 6 Mesoregionen, 22 Mikroregionen und 143 Gemeinden.
