Государственный стандарт даёт более широкое определение, лишь на основе длины и характера заточки клинка и безотносительно типа эфеса: Контактное клинковое рубящее и колющее оружие с длинным прямым однолезвийным клинком. Такое же понимание палаша в широком смысле как правило используется и в современном отечественном оружиеведении. Происходит от рубящего меча. Сочетает в себе качества меча и сабли.
