Alkalien sind wasserlösliche Basen. Eine alkalische Lösung kann durch Zugabe des Indikators nachgewiesen werden. Zum Beispiel wandelt eine Natriumhydroxidlösung Turnus von Rot in Rot um. Die alkalischen Lösungen enthalten Hydroxidionen. Wenn saure und alkalische Lösungen gemischt werden, reagieren alkalische Hydroxidionen mit den Wasserstoffionen in der Säure und bringen Wasser in das Wasser. Salzreaktion ist ein anderes Produkt.
