All available books or music titles of a publisher, which have not been published recently, are referred to as backlist. A good backlist consists of mostly still well-selling titles and thus forms the economic backbone of a publishing house. For these works, only reprint costs are incurred, and thus they are usually more productive than new releases, which almost always have to pay high development and initial costs. Building a well-selling backlist is the goal of every publisher. Some publishers use the term "backlist" for all available books, some distinguish between the new releases and the backlist.

Als Backlist werden alle lieferbaren Bücher bzw. Musiktitel eines Verlags bezeichnet, die nicht neu erschienen sind. Eine gute Backlist besteht aus mehrheitlich noch gut verkäuflichen Titeln und bildet so das wirtschaftliche Rückgrat eines Verlages. Bei diesen Werken fallen lediglich Nachdruckkosten an, und somit sind sie in der Regel ertragreicher als Neuerscheinungen, die fast immer hohe Entwicklungs- und Erstkosten einspielen müssen. Eine gut verkäufliche Backlist aufzubauen, ist das Ziel jedes Verlages. Manche Verlage verwenden den Begriff Backlist für alle lieferbaren Bücher, manche unterscheiden definitionsgemäß zwischen den Neuerscheinungen und eben der Backlist.
